If you’ve ever wished that you could look into the brain of a hiring manager to find out what you need to do to get hired, this is for you. Written from my perspective as a long-time hiring manager, this e-book gives you step-by-step guidance through every stage of your job search … explaining at each step what a hiring manager is thinking and what they want to see from you … from getting noticed initially, to nailing the interview, to navigating the tricky post-interview period, all the way through your offer.

You’ll learn things like:

  • what hiring managers are looking for when they ask common interview questions
  • how to talk about sensitive issues when you interview — firings, bad bosses, and more
  • how to avoid companies that aren’t a good fit
  • 6 ways you might be sabotaging your job search
  • 2 ways you can turn rejection to your advantage

Here are some things readers have said after purchasing it:

“Thanks to following Alison’s advice in this book, I’m about to start a new job in a stretch position. The director of HR kept complimenting my professionalism through the entire process, and really loved the questions I asked during my interviews. My new manager is so excited he was vibrating when I signed the offer last week. And partly due to selling myself well, and partly due to changing from clerical work to network administration, I have a 50% salary increase and room to grow.”

“Thanks to the tips, tricks, and advice in this book, I landed an incredible new job in a new-to-me industry doing something I love. I was also able to negotiate a great hiring package including a big jump in salary and benefits. I’m sure I would have found a decent job without this book, but I absolutely feel that I was able to find something incredible with it.”

“This morning my husband had an interview. I bugged him for over a week about reading your guide and he ignored me. Yesterday, I twisted his arm and finally got him to read it. He liked the advice so much he read it a second time. He really took it seriously and followed all of the advice you gave … He just called me to tell me the interview was done and that it had been the best interview he had ever had.”

“I used to have 50/50 luck getting past phone interviews and into the actual in-person interview. Once I read your book, I went 100% in getting past the phone interview, and I was ALWAYS in the top running for every position since then. I absolutely know it was because of your advice in the book. I could just feel the quality of my interviews go up exponentially after I read it.”

“A+, highly recommend. It gave me invaluable help in my last job search and I am sure will continue to provide value as I move along in my career. If you’re on the fence, GET IT.”

I thought I was pretty good at job-hunting, but bought Alison’s book after a few months of fruitless searching. I only made a few minor changes as a result of reading it, but they were important changes and I’ve been in a job I love for more than a year.

I have the book, and it really helped me with my last interview, after which I was selected for the position.

I have been searching for llama herding support to a Grand Boss position for a year. I get first interviews and that’s where it stops, despite rehearsing answers to questions I pulled from Alison’s site. It’s competitive, so if reading this book helps me tweak my answers, I’m all for it! I did make one of the final two candidates at one company, but they chose the internal candidate. However, I so appreciated the Grand Boss personally calling to tell me and referring to me as a “high quality candidate”, so that helped!

I love your name, it’s part of a nickname of mine because my grandma always sang that song. Best of luck to you on the job search!!

Can you link to instructions for how to save it to a kindle? I just bought the book but I don’t want to click the download link and accidentally save it only to my phone

Looks like Amazon stopped supporting MOBI files! So you’ll want to use the EPUB file that’s included in the download you got. You can upload the file to this website and it will send it straight to your Kindle (you’ll need to be logged into your Amazon account when you go here, so that it knows the associated Kindle to use):

Can we stop using “bible” as a synonym for definitive reference guides? I mean just me personally, a non-Christian over here, but I don’t see a “bible” as a book of rules I should follow. I’ll refrain from explaining how I do see it, but suffice it to say, I wouldn’t reach for a “bible” on any topic.

    1. YaBetterWerk*

Bible: a publication that is preeminent especially in authoritativeness or wide readership

      Seems appropriate in this context.

    2. RagingADHD*

Small-b “bible” refers to a collection of books / reference material. From Greek, via Latin biblia, meaning “books.”

Hi Alison! I’d love to gift this e-book to my 2 student mentees this year. In the past you helped me get that coordinated so the purchase was registered to *their* email addresses, not mine. Can you help me again this year?

  6. New Mom*

I was actually looking to buy this yesterday so it was very timely. Is anyone else having an issue when trying to checkout as a guest? I entered my email and then selected “continue to payment” and it just refreshes to the same page.

Any chance it works with a different browser? Either way, feel free to email me and I can get you a customized link that should work. (alison@askamanager.org)

  7. Filthy Vulgar Mercenary*

If someone really needs this book and the $25 is still a stretch (which if you’re out of a job it absolutely can be) I am willing to pay for 2 books for someone. Email Alison and she can connect you to me.

  8. Elizabeth Bennet*

    Hi Alison,
I looove your column. The funny thing is, I only discovered it last summer right after I retired from a 30-year teaching career. Lol. I’m still learning a lot! Anyway, I ordered your book for my daughter and realized that I accidentally had it sent to me. I haven’t opened the link yet. Is there a way I can send it on to her? I know you said above that you could do a customized link.

    1. Ask a Manager* Post author

Yes! You can simply forward her the email you get after buying it. (Make sure she sees she needs to download the link within 5 days so it doesn’t expire.)

  9. Mimmy*

Need help from the techies in the room: I just downloaded the book files to my computer and Alison says that it can be read on Kindle (in a reply to me upthread). How do I get this onto my Kindle? I have a Kindle paperwhite, 7th generation.

      1. Mimmy*

Found it! So I guess I extract the files, then send to my Kindle?

        What’s the “.DS Store”?

Ahhhh, looks like Amazon stopped supporting MOBI files! So you’ll want to use the EPUB file that’s included in the download you got. I want to get this for a friend, but neither she nor I do e-books. Is it available in print? I checked Amazon and couldn’t find it.

  11. Spanish Prof*

Friends, do any of you know if the download link only works once? I’m on my mobile device tonight and wanted to start reading my new purchase, but I would want to download it onto my computer tomorrow, as well. Thanks!

    1. I went to school with only 1 Jennifer*

I don’t know (and I’m glad the discount was still available today, since I just got it) but can you transfer the file, via email or thumb drive?

      1. Spanish Prof*

I wrote to Alison and she told me I could use the link more than once, and it worked! I now have it on my cell phone and my laptop. It downloads as a .zip folder with a variety of useful file formats you can choose from depending on your device. I’m using the .pdf version :)
